WSET 1 Florence, Italy course description

The Level 1 WSET course teaches the student the fundamentals about wine - it is intended for those who have little, or no prior knowledge of wines. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to wines.

  • The course covers:

  • How wine is made

  • What the "Noble" grape varieties are

  • How to select a wine off a wine list

  • How to correctly serve and store wine and How to spot a faulty wine.

Food and wine matching workshops on Friday morning help students to understand how certain foods can increase or decrease their appreciation of wine (when and when not to spend up therefore when out for dinner).

On Saturday morning we will enjoy a sparkling wine breakfast, comparing the bubbles in Champagne, Franciacorta and Prosecco… for academic purposes of course…

Finally, because we are in Tuscany for this WSET 1 we will apply our WSET skills to some of this region’s finest wines alongside plates of local hams and cheeses.

The course includes a minimum of 6 hours course time and a 45 minute multiple choice exam.

The course will be held Friday 10:30am to 13:30pm and Saturday 10:30am to 15:30pm, and Sunday 10:30am to 11:30am. Guests can check in to the Peruzzi residence from 14:00 on Thursday afternoon.

Florence, Italy course location: Peruzzi Residences

This WSET course is taught in Florence, Italy. The Renaissance capital in the center of Tuscany provides a conveniently located, central backdrop for learning. This course is thus aimed both at residents of Florence and Tuscany looking for a non-residential occasion to take the exam, and at visitors from beyond Florence interested in making this course a destination.

We have chosen the newly opened Peruzzi Urban Residences in the Santa Croce area of Florence as our course location, a boutique hotel in a just-renovated 13th-century palazzo. It is owned by the Malenchini family, also owners of Villa Medicea Di Lilliano and location of their winery. Their regal living room just steps from the church of Santa Croce will be where we’ll learn about wines. We’ve reserved the whole palazzo for our group and you’ll find it like your home away from home.
